I joined the gym in early 2019 and went to the fitness screening because it was free, not because I expected to learn anything new after a lifetime working out or to change my skeptical view of trainers: I can do a sit up without paying someone to yell in my ear, thanks. Then I met Kevin, who was my screener. His questions and tests revealed limitations I was only dimly aware of, many lingering effects of old injuries that a long string of physical therapists had never fully diagnosed or repaired. They had left me strong and flexible within the narrow range of exercise I had repeated for years. Self-delusions shattered, I went to work with Kevin. Within weeks, my non-working parts were starting to function, my weak parts were getting stronger. My back and shoulder pains were easing. I could do simple things like turn around to back the car out of the driveway or pop up on a surfboard more easily. Kevin taught me a range of new exercises, from Yoga stretches to farmer’s carries and the Nordic ski machine, that I had never even considered. His plan made workouts more varied, challenging and fun. I thought I was plenty motivated, but Kevin’s focused presence, and the grace he brings to demonstrating new exercises, gave me a higher bar to shoot for. I had to admit I was working harder. No yelling involved. More important was my re-education in the Iron Tribe's school of functional fitness. Without even quite realizing it, I had learned to work around my physical limitations. Kevin identified the flaws, created routines to correct them, added a dose of inspiration, and showed me how much progress you can make in strength, balance, flexibility and joint range of motion, even as you are pushing 60.
